I've been told that there might be a cheaper sensor made available soon for the Focus. Is that true?

Yes, Ford has done away with banded sensors as they are expensive and time consuming to replace. There are multiple alternatives to the banded sensors such as the Huf replacements (RDE014) or the Schrader EZ-Sensor. Both of these alternatives are made by OE Manufacturers and work just as well as the banded sensor for a fraction of the cost.
