General Motors is recalling nearly 34,000 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and 2012 GMC Terrain vehicles due to faulty tire pressure monitoring systems. According to the NHTSA, models manufactured between July 18 and September 6, 2011 fail to meet federal standards for TPMS systems.

TPMS systems are required to illuminate a warning light whenever tire pressures on the vehicle fall below 25% of the recommended pressure. NHTSA says that the affected models fail to illuminate the warning light until the tires have fallen substantially below that level. Low tire pressures decrease fuel economy and performance, can damage or destroy tires and can cause blowouts and accidents.

The recalled models have a fault in the electronic control module that receives transmissions from the pressure monitors installed in each tire and illuminates the light on the dashboard. GM will update the module free of charge.

The vehicle's build date is listed on a sticker inside the driver's side door. Owners can call Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 , GMC at 1-866-996-9463, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 1-888-327-4236 or visit Safercar.gov for more details. GM's recall number is 11261.
